I liked how Vanilla forums was so simple. I used to use them with my WordPress blog before I got Vbulletin.

PHPbb and SMF are two good ones. I was working on both of those two with a professor of mine that I have known since 2003 and keep in contact with. I used to help as an admin in regards to keeping both sites up and running and maintaining them with him. Very easy to install on a server remotely that is out on the internet. Or run it on a server more locally to the lan as well. Never had a problem with either of those two applications for running a message board.

I agree with @Brendon1555, MyBB is pretty powerful, but don't forget phpBB as well!

I have ran several forums for long periods of time. I have ran many forums running all sorts of forum software. phpBB may be a good thing to look at, not my favorite but it is FREE! And that seems like the key you are looking for.

Let me know if you need any help, I am curious to see what the forum topic is

Regards,

Eric Jess

I've used SMF before in the past, and I loved it. It's easy to work with, easy to extend, and easy to theme. http://www.simplemachines.org/

phpBB is used by a lot of forums. Best of all it's open source!

I've always liked mybb. It's fairly simple to use but still quite powerful.
