I've spent most my life on Linux and Windows and have always used command line compression tools or winrar. Now I'm on a Mac and am wondering what people think is the best free file compression tool? One of the major things I'm looking for is the ability to compress files and folders from within The Finder.

The best file compressor for Windows I know of is 7zip. There are several free 7zip read/writers available for Mac including but not limited to Ez7z and 7zX.
