Any tips to customize a blogger blog?

Hi. Because I don't have the money to use a paid host, I'm going to have to use Blogger/Blogspot to host my blog. What I would like to know is are there any recommendations that you guys have that I can do customize this blog to make it my own.

blogger is an excellent platform, i highly recommend it, u can customize a great deal of it by going into layout section and clicking in customize template, choose simple looking templates and use great but subtle color schemes.
