Why does my win 7 pro laptop say windows 6.1(vista) build 7601 sp1? |

Mine says the same thing it is because it is build on the 6.1 version of the Windows Kernel. Windows XP and 2000 were both 5. somethings. This is how Windows is designed. It is the same with Mac OS, the "X" means that it is the tenth version and has been for sometime, they were on 9 before that.

Windows ME was using a different Kernel than windows 2000 or better. Windows 2000 was taken from Windows NT 4.0 which was meant for business computers at the time. Then with some changes of the interface for XP. and a complete redesign for vista and windows 7. Thank you for correcting me. No problem thetechDude. we are all here to learn off of each other. in order 95, 95b, 98, 98se, 98me 2000(which was the prototype hybrid of 98 and nt), xp(which was a polished version of 2000). OS9..... kernel?

because windows 7 does not mean windows 7.0.0... it is a little confusing |

Because Windows 7's version is 6.1. They should have changed the version to 7.0 but I guess they didn't want to mess up their numbering conventions or something, and also couldn't think of anything else to name it. Also Vista is 6.0, not 6.1. Windows 95 (and Windows NT) - 4.0 |
