selling an item on ebay and there is no money in my paypal account???

I am new to selling stuff on ebay. This is my first item auction on ebay, and it is in the middle of it, and before the action ends i want to find out, how does payment work. When the buyer pays for the item does it go straight into your PayPal account or do you have to wait many days before the payment is cleared. Also do I post the item before cleared payment or ship it out.
