Well, make sure it is listed on Google. That way, if people Google your name, your websites name, or any of the content on your website, you appear.
You can do this by following the link: http://www.google.com/addurl/

Create compelling, unique content.
Keep your content fresh (update it if it's information that gets stale/changes over time.)
Create an environment that allows a vibrant and helpful community of people to interact on your website -- through a discussion forum, livestream, podcast with live Q&A, etc.
Know your audience.
Know your competition -- what do their websites offer, and even more importantly, what DON'T their websites offer? You want your website(s) to provide value your competitors' websites do not.
Don't focus on advertising before you've done all of the above.
It's easier to make a successful website if the website deals with something you're passionate about. Don't pick some topic just because you think it'll get you the highest paying ads, unless you're able to really stick with it even though the topic doesn't inspire you. If you're not inspired/interested, strangers certainly won't be!
