Tips For Running A Minecraft Public Server

Hi, I'm going to be launching a public no whitelist mine craft server in the coming days. I was wondering if anyone here owns a server/has dealt with administration a server and has some tips (beside the obvious). They can be on anything really. Preventing griefing, getting donations, getting your server out there, getting a community, etc. Thank in advance!

I can provide some tips on the administration side of the server as I currently run two of my own servers. I recommend using Bukkit ( http://bukkit.org/ ) to run your server it is a modded version of Minecraft that looks the same to all of your clients but like most servers you ply on allows for mods to be added. Also, download a plugin called essentials this plugin will allow you to do things like prevent fire damage/spread or creeper damage. It also gives you access to new commands and comes with a program called "Group Manager" you can use "Group Manager" to give different players different abilities on your server. I run a private server for about 10 or my friends. The only problem with Bukkit right now is it take the Bukkit development community a few days to get a new version up and running so right now the recommended build is still for 1.1 however they will soon probably have a 1.2.3 version ready.

I have not found a way to disable negative money however, if a in-game player doesn't have more than that they are looking to spend the game doesn't let the go in to negative money. The only way to get negative money is to use /eco.

Also, to prevent some hacks use this: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/nocheat/ . I use it to prevent flying on my server.

Main problem with public servers are hacks.

People find it "fun" to go in a server and fly around removing 100 blocks and lagging the fuck out of your server.

Second thing is to have a good server provider. EG, Warservers.NET

Third is not to invite 5 year olds who want to be OP....

All I can really think of to manage everyone in your sever is to use Group Manager (or Permissions) and if they do something they know there no to do build a jail and put them in jail with the jail commands.

as a suggestion from a player's perspective do not de-activate mobs! too many servers do it and it really affects the game play taking allot of the fun out of the game overall

You can get a plugin to define where mobs can/can't spawn.

yes the server i play on does that in which you warp to a designated area where mobs spawn but this takes away allot of the fun of the game, i would say however making it so mobs can't spawn inside towns would be ok but the should be able to spawn in any other area
