you should be able to read the DVD drive using the Finder or Windows Explorer

if your talking about getting a movie off a dvd try a program called handbreak

I have that, but it won't work, the disc is mini-DVD could that be the problem?

You should be able to open it as a standard drive, edit it from a copy on your hard drive, and reburn the disc.
