Dear Readers,

I was wondering if you could give me some help with building a database. I am using microsoft access 2007 and the database needs the following features: Search (to search database). Callendar interface (so that you click on a date to see what is going on, on that day). Multiple user enteries over the internet (maybe with log ins etc. so that users can edit from wherever they are through the internet). Internet communication (so they can click a button and an automatic e-mail can be sent to them).

If you are not sure how to do this, do you know anybody who builds databases who could help me out a bit?

Also when you buy a domain name, how do you create e-mails using that name (I.e. @lockergnome.com">chris@lockergnome.com, if you baught lockergnome.com do you automatically have the right to set up the e-mails, and how many do you get?) and do you know any free (wanting work for their portfolio) website designers.

It's been almost a year now, I think we can safely remove the obnoxious "PLEASE REPLY SOON!" in the title.

You're going to need a lot more than Access to achieve this. You can build the database itself but accessing it is going to require specially written web applications at the very least. It's going to take considerably more than a 'bit' of help and I think you should expect to have to pay for it if you're not going to do the bulk of the work yourself! Likewise with web design.

Email access to a domain name will depend on who hosts the site. Most hosts provide an email service but obviously the number of addresses etc. will depend on them.

The question is is this database that you want done is it for personal use with Microsoft access2007 or is it being shared on a local drive on a network that is being used lets say between several people within the same building as an example. I have personally made some databases that had search criteria and and a little windows that had a calendar on it for date entry or manually entered it in there.

What is the specific purpose of the database going to be used where you are?

" Multiple user enteries over the internet" makes it pretty clear that it's not a local network doesn't it?

By the sounds of it, you want anyone with an account to be able to edit the information in your database. If this is right, then my personal recommendation would be to have the site designed with a user account feature, something you will need, and then you will need to create the database and connect to it through the site. It's fairly simple to do at the start, but there is more to it than simply creating a database. I would seek help for it and you will probably have to pay someone to do this.

Then basically it is not directed with Microsoft access that you'll be needing to do that. More along the lines like mysql with some basic searches and all that will do the trick for your case. I've seen in some large Corporations where a particular program that is using Microsoft access across different satellite offices being done with Microsoft access. but it was with a shared drive where the database is being held at and being used amongst the satellite offices. Or an application like IEX was installed locally and the IEX server was stationed at the main office where it was getting the requests for particular information from the Satellite offices. That is why I was asking if it was going to be a shared drive aongst the different places or it was an application that Access cannot do the job but myswl along with Apache or Internet information services will do the kind of job that your looking for.

Here's a paper that describes how to use RemoteApp to do this. This only applies if there's a limited number of simultaneous users.

Using Terminal Services and RemoteApp to Extend Your Microsoft Access and other Windows Applications Over the Internet: http://www.fmsinc.com/MicrosoftAccess/terminal-services/remoteapp.htm

Hope this helps
