Okay, so I have a Wordpress site almost ready to go. We have some content up already and we have the site designed as we would like, everything is working fine. There is one big addition that we want though. This is a user account feature. We would like people to be able to sign up for an account on the site, and then create their own content that is linked back to their user. As an admin of the site, we would then like to control which content is pushed to the home page of the site, and maybe build an algorithm to determine why one piece of content would be there instead of another.

We would like the users to be able to give us basic information about themselves as well, so that other people can, for example, contact that user. Is this even possible through Wordpress? If it is, could anyone offer a little help as to where to start, many thanks!

I would agree with Camelia on this one she is pointing you in the right direction when your going to be inviting them and have them set up as a partcular roll for your blog over there. Where everything can be arrange and set up for it. Read the link it is very useful to know and understand each roll for what your looking into there.
