Do you think that Canada made a mistake discontinuing the penny?

I think they (government) should be discontinuing the toonie ($2 Coin) instead of the penny.

UPDATE

I just wanted to update you guys if you haven't been following the "Penny-Phase-Out" with a link to the Canadian government's website page on the matter. actionplan.gc.ca/penny

I actually like the Toonie, because it's not just another boring old, single material coin, it has two (external) materials, and the silver and gold go together so nice.

Not a Canadian, but I think Canada made the right move. Here in the U.S. pennies are seldom used, and if something's for 99 cents, do you really expect your penny back? It's technically a $1, lol.

I totally agree with getting rid of it (last penny was minted two days ago in Canada). I'm not going to bother explaining why I like it, because I know of a perfect video for this topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU4E6SSy5Yg

Here, in Australia, the one cent coin has long been gone- & there's talk of ditching the five cent piece as well. I'm all for it. Rounding to ten cents only "makes sense" when you live in a metric/decimal country (besides, five cents is now basically the value equivalent of what one cent used to represent?). It's time for the entire world to go metric.

We also don't have the ridiculous, individual sales tax on goods & services. Whatever the price tag says here, that's it- no tax to add because it's already been figured in. Sooo much easier &, again, makes sense. I remember going from one state to another (sometimes even one county to another) in the U.S. & having to figure 6.25%, then 7%, then 5,25% sales tax, on top of an item costing 79.29 with a 15% off sale...good grief! You have to walk around with a calculator out.

End of rant :)

Preech! I'm all for the metric stysrem here in America. In the Dominican Republic, where I live partly, is all metric, so why can't my native country be as well?

Always wondered why the US never went through with it. Seems more logical, to me at least. I know they(US Government) tried, but quickly ditched the idea. Also happy to say I'm in one of the few states that doesn't have any sales tax lol.

They are wanting to remove the 1pence coin here in the UK.

There are 33 million in circulation and a lot more missing.

It is because of it's low value that people chuck them on the floor and don't care about them.

Got rid of one of our coins here in Denmark about 3 years ago... It was too expensive considering how little the coin was worth.. .

In the netherlands 1 and 2 cents or not really used any more. The 2 cents is not officially discontinued, but most people don't use it anymore. Luckily, because who really pays with 1 and 2 cents. I do rarely. Most is with 10, 20, 50, 1euro and 2euro or paper money. It's just not convenient anymore.

The U.S. should follow suit, it costs more to even make them than they actually cost! They are just a burden, and Canada made the right move!

Discontinuing the Canadian penny was a superb action and the United States should do the same.

The value of a Canadian penny is less than the metal and cost to stamp it, so yeah. It has to be done.
