When signing up for games or websites, does giving false birth dates really matter and can it largely affect opportunity? I just do because I really like to keep personal life away from my online life. WHat do you think and do you think it even matters enough to delete accounts and making ones with the right data or what? ANd what do you do?

That wall exists to cover the company so they can say they're trying to keep minors out. It's very rare that they'll actually care, let alone do anything about it.

It's up to each of us to decide what's right or wrong. While it is wrong to lie, I think it's wrong to restrict anything based on age. If you're a minor, it should be up to the parents, end of story. So there's some gray area there.

As far as privacy, they have your IP address, the date you enter, the date and time you accessed the site, and some metadata about your browser and its capabilities. Not nearly enough to identify you, unless you give them more on top of that.

For me,it depends on who I am giving my age to. Something like Google, when I was not allowed to join Google Plus because I was under 18, I accepted that. With the big companies, you should never lie, because they do keep that information with them. But for a web game, or a video, it't not as big of a deal. Also, never lie when it comes to something with baking or money.

They barely even take notice of it. It is a thing they have to do legally to keep the site up. Some websites are serious about it but most I know of don't care as long as you behave. Once you turn 18 you should try to set the record straight though.

As for games and sites that lock your age like Youtube and more?

Well you're giving false information and misrepresenting yourself. If you're agreeing to some TOS that states all the information you've given is true then you're violating that too. Are you ok with that?

I'm not saying anyone is going to stop you or you're going to get into trouble but it's more of an ethical question you have to ask yourself. You can't really separate "personal life" and "online life" these days. Just having a Facebook account destroys that line.

lieing about your age is not keeping your personal life separate it is just lieing ,in any case you cant keep much from them you have to have flash java and other pluggins working for game sites they have access to everything on your computer any and all data they could even flip on and off your webcam take a piture of you if they wanted ..

not sayikng any do just that if your running a game it is possible for then to see who is there playing if its an online game ..

It depends on your age, I am pushing 60 and a gamer, they think I am joking about my age, or lying, it is just a pain in my book, but the age requirement is there for those under 18 so they can't play the games that are excluded for under 18's, so yes it is important, as they must adhere to government policy

Although most companies, most likely do not care, I prefer to have a legitimate age on my profile, first off it just plain off looks a bit tacky, and ruins your credibility, or down the line when it is required on a profile, an official one, and I have nothing to hide, I prefer having basic information about myself online, even with my google/youtube accounts, I counted down the days until I could register my pjob797 gmail account, (although for google plus, I did make a gmail for my father who just happens to share the same name as me, me being a Sr. me Jr.) but I think its better to be honest on your profiles, and just helps your credibility n the future, remember that anything can be trace back to you in one way or another, and by no means is that a reason to be "afraid" of the internet, just don't be an idiot and be honest.

In retrospect this response seems so off-topic, oh well...

I think its pretty on topic point is its the internet a 24/7 world wide tool and even if your not entirely high profile a search will normally pull up more then a few link with your name age address ..

if you are moderate profile even and have been around morethen a few year have had myspace accounts facebook Linkedin and or a personal web page the info is out there and crediabity will be a factor some where down the line
