Recently I tried to restore my iPhone 4 because sometimes the battery craps out and needs to be restored to fix the problem and I am procratinating to upsate my iPhone to 5.1.1 and when i update iTunes says "This device can not be updated due to the software can n ot be supported on your device". I want to know if the iPhone can actually support iOS 5.1.1. or if this is bs.

Yes the iPhone 4 does support iOS 5.1.1. Did you download the firmware via iTunes or a Third Party?

Either way, I suggest you do a DFU mode restore, here are instructions.
