Hey everyone.

So a bunch of my friends and I are looking at hosting a small Gaming LAN. We originally were going to have a 24 port gigabit switch and a old router as a DHCP to enable ip assigning, however word got out and our numbers have grown from around 10-15 of us, to around 40+ interested in the LAN.

We have the switches available but I was wondering if there was a way we can use a old desktop as a DHCP server and put software on it so I can manage the networking side of things, Such as the router would do with the MAC blocking and Data transfer rates etc, but a lot easier to manage as it wont be router based. it will be software based on the desktop.

I hope this all makes sense and someone can help us out with what we want. Anything not making sense feel free to ask me questions and ill do my best to answer them.

Cheers in advance

I've done something like this in Linux. I use an old PC as a gateway to NAT & firewall my section of the network away from the rest. It's a fairly easy process to get the basic setup working. You will want to have a pretty good knowledge of iptables if you choose this route and plan to do any traffic control.

Linux would definately help you out on that part of the problem. ClearOS which is a linux varient which you can set it up as a server with a DHCP assignment on it for what your looking for. Here is the link for it so you can check it out. http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html

I think that might be a better solution like what JDHHDJ has mentioned. Since it would help you out on it. And you can have your gaming lan party with your friends there.

Good find. It reminded me of Untangle ( http://www.untangle.com/ ). It's the same premise, just a different way of going about it.

Yeah looks about the same give or take. Nothing wrong with that one either. It is always good to give what you know or at least lead them in the right direction with the right website or multiple websites to give them or anyone the information they need to get the job done. That's a good find there as well.
