Why When I close the lid of my laptop and then open it again later it stays a black screen and it doesn't go to the log in screen?

It probably is something in the power settings. But, it's a Dell.

I had a dell that started do this out of no where no changes made at all ..

your results may vary but here is what I found and happened with mine the solution was not in power management or anywhere else to be found just closed my computer one day and discovered I had to cold shut down to get things going ..

at first it was like a pattern developed I notice if I was just away for a few mins there was no problem how ever go away for an hour or two come back and the lap top would not wake up and resume at all it was clearly on things were lite how every the drive would not go the processor would not wake ..

after a few months things got worse every time the lap top would hibernate I would have to cold power dow and reboot , not a good thing so I decided to do a full re install see if this helped which it did how ever the re install of windows 7 took a record long 15 hours before it finally completed which from all my XP is very strange too ..

the re install new helped a lot , how ever shortly after the re-install one day sitting using the lap top for seemingly no reason while plugged into the changer everything running fine I was surffing the net noticed the lap top stopped charging though the light on the charger was on and it was powered the battery was plugged in well the computer ran until the battery was low and it shut the computer down ..

i took the the lap top to a tech who tested the laptop with several new charger power supply and batteries with no luck nothing would light it would no boot even with a new fully charged battery..

opened the tested the old charger it had no out put opened the lap yop it seemed the mother board was dead the hard drive had many many bad sectors and when check on another computer was mysteriously 89% fragmented the battery was found to be toast as well ..

now mind you there was no damage to this computer what so ever I had sat there for hours surfing the web and various thing with the computer until the moment the battery went dead it ran fine there was no slowness in loading anything I was using many programs multiple tabs in the browser ..

the estimate for repair was over $450 the cost of a new laptop $375

does the system go into sleep/hibernate when you close the lid, or does it just stay on??

what programs are you running when you close the laptop, it might be something causing the system to hang when it goes into hibernate.

it could also be your graphics drivers crashing, try updating them.

My dell did this to me until I installed the Quickset for the device. Install the Quickset and it will stop. It worked for my Latitude D620.
