Hi Getting a canon t3i in 2 days and wanted to know if the AT2020 XLR would work. here : http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/contents/ASIA/EN/8201006800.html canon states it cant supper phantom power so does the at2020 need phantom power? this is the at2020: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/audio-technica-audio-technica-cardioid-condenser-microphone-at2020-at2020/10160343.aspx?path=1857fa6ee14b1f7ffe1de8b4cd628868en02 |

I believe it does need phantom power, so you'd need to use something like the Beachtek DXA-SLR to adapt it to the camera, or just get a Rode Videomic and plug it right in. |

I have the AT2020 and it does require a phantom power thingy, I'm not sure how you'd connect it to your Cannon t3i though... |

All condenser microphones require phantom power. For the price you'd spend on adapters and such, you're probably better off just getting a shotgun microphone like the Rode VideoMic. |

Ok, in that case would anyone be kind enough to recommend high quality condensers that dont require it. I must have one because a shotgun mic is not ideal for the type of filming we are doing. |

If you don't mind the bulk (something larger than the camera) you can get a blue microphone yeti then use a portable USB power supply to power it then use a line in cable to connect from the monitor jack to the camera. Will work well if you don't mine the size and the weight (much heavier then the camera also) other than that, I recommend getting a shotgun mic or another camera that is designed for working with a camera eg PS avoid using an omni directional mic to record vocals, especially when indoors since omni directional microphones pickup a lot of room noise and generally have a poor SNR If the mic is going to be on the camera then a directional microphone is a must PS in film making, background noise is added in post production. You use directional mics to record the actors and then you use directional mics to record sound effects (eg doors closing, car starting and other random sounds, then a stereo (or if you want to go fancy then you can get a binaural recording for environmental sounds, eg if you want to capture the sound of a storm or a forest or any sound where there is a ton of stuff happening around you) (PS the basic shotgun mics for the cameras (eg the one I linked to) has a slightly more narrow cardioid pattern so you will get very similar results to the AT2020) (the shotgun mic has a 150 degree pickup pattern http://www.rodemic.com/mics/videomic |
