Looking for a decent camera/lens.

It needs:

  • Good zoom while keeping quality
  • Wide lens although not necessary
  • High quality photo's
  • Records video in 1080p

My budget is about £400 ($628 USD) (camera and lens combined if they come separately)

Don't know too much about cameras. For home use, nothing professional but still want the good quality.

Just to make it clear, I want a suggested camera AND lens combined in my price range. Anything between £300 and £400.

Most budget DSLRs come with an 18-55mm lens... This will be fine to start you off. You can then invest in lenses later on such as an 18-270mm (good allround) and still use the lenses when you want to upgrade the body. However this does require you to stick to the one brand for this to work.

If you only have a £400 budget and want a body + lens, I would wait for a bigger budget. Just my opinion.

Buying a budget body now, and then investing in lenses is a much better way of doing things if you are starting off.

Most budget bodys have a good guide system (ala Nikon 3100) which will teach him the basics to taking good pictures. He will be limited to then 18-55 lenses in his budget, which granited is not brilliant, but he can buy a good 18-270 lenses or something later. Then when he has outgrown the budget body he can upgrade the body and use the same lenses!

This would be a good starter camera...

A wide angel lenses you will NOT get for your budget, but you can always add lenses later on...

As for the zoom, again that is a lens thing, however the 18-55 lens that is with the camera is not bad. I take decent photos with mine, I do however have the older D60 body.
