Half of the survey’s 298 participants, all of whom identified themselves as social media users, say that their use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter makes their lives worse. In particular, participants noted that their self-esteem suffers when they compare their own accomplishments to those of their online friends.

Yes, of course it does. But this is only a continuation of High School angst. Hell is other people. There's no surprise that you can't leave it behind you in the virtual world any more than you can in the real one.

That's a bunch of bologna! Pathetic excuse to not take responsibility for the condition of your life if you ask me. People are always trying to place blame somewhere as to why they are not happy when in reality they are not happy because of their own choices. Also, if people would stop worrying so much about the other person they could focus more on their own life. If you think the grass is greener on the other side maybe you should water yours more!

I'll spare myself the enormous pleasure I get from proving that happiness is both an illusion and a sociopathic mental illness to point out that happiness is not the subject of the study. Anxiety and low self-esteem are entirely separate issues from 'happiness'. The study also points out that the effect of social networks is to force comparison upon you in a way that negates your supposed remedy!

Your complete ignorance of the way that mental illness and social anxiety works drips from every word of your invective. If life weren't bad enough for these people they are constantly subject to this kind of tyrannical assault from the 'normal' ones. It's frankly disgusting that the more science shows that we are 'responsible' for less of our behaviour than we ever imagined, the more and louder the cries of "It's your own fault!" come.
