Instead of Windows, you'll be better off with Linux. People get scared when they hear Linux because they think "Hackers" & "Codes" but really Linux is not. Plus, it's much harder to get viruses on Linux.

I recommend these Distributions of Linux: Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/

Linux Mint http://linuxmint.com/

Fedora http://fedoraproject.org/

All free and much smaller and faster than windows

With 1 GB of RAM, I would choose a lighter distribution like Lubuntu. It's not as user friendly, but it's incredibly fast. However, all of your listed OSs are fantastic!

Thanks! Never used Lubuntu before.. Will try it out though.

linux Ubuntu or any other linux. I have found that Windows doesn't run that well on 1gb of memory but linux does!

Linux has become easier to use nowadays. I've started learning about linux when I was on a Pentium II computers and a little bit earlier than that even on a 386 or 486 systems. Ubuntu, Fedora Linux Mint are good ones to start off with and depending which GUI you want to use on it will depend on you. Take a look on Distrowatch.com and pick one that would suite your needs for this particular system. Plus only have 1 gig of ram onboard for windows vista or 7 will be a bit slower since they need at least recommended of 2-3 gigs of ram to run more smoothly. Linux runs nicely even on 1 gig of ram.

Well this question is asked alot, it depends on what you will be using your computer to do, if you do a lot of video rendering then Mac OSX is the better option though for word processing and less performance then Windows will be adequate, though is you require a free and smooth operating system then Linux Ubuntu is a nice choice.

unless your talking about going win98 or XP , anything more then that from microsoft would stop that computer in its tracks, the thing it has going for it is that it seems to have a true 64bit processor..

nearly most all current version of linux will run on it , the liter the version the better such as Lubuntu how ever it if this is not a true 64bit machine but 32bit pae pretty much its history even most linux flavors are dropping support for them other then the mini installs the more you can boost the ram the better off you will be you want to be able to run on raw ram without a lot of HD caching swapping other then hibernate and sleep mode ..

I would recommend Ubuntu as well. Have it running on a 7 year old laptop, which was originally a XP machine... Runs smooth as hell...

I would run 7 with another gig of ram. Even with Linux some programs like photo editors may crash on start due to segmentation faults. The RAM is probably the biggest issue and if it has integrated graphics it may do better than the 6100. If you could upgrade it a little cost effectively I think you would find it more usable.

I maintained one not too long ago with less of both that ran surprisingly well and is probably the more common configuration.

Try running 7 on this. http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/latit/x300_spec.pdf

And you will want to kill yourself.

Probably. I think that one kinda fits in the P3 realm.

with a 2.4 GHz 64bit processor & a gig of RAM, XPsp2 would run just fine. Fast for the layperson and fast for the the-world-revolves-around-my-computer has a different meaning. If you browse, check your e-mail, log into Facebook occasionally and download stuff (use your computer for everyday stuff) and you're familiar with the windows interface, go w/XP. I wouldn't recommend vista or 7. However, Linux is defiantly a smaller OS that's not as resource-hungry . . .
