I recently bought a used Emac from a garage sale. I already have a computer that is fine but it caught my eye because it was only 5 dollars. I got it home, booted it up and found that the system password is unknown to me. The previous owner had left his old password on there :( ... I have looked at some other forum articles and many people have a similar problem. There is one method that involves booting up the computer whilst holding cmd+s to open terminal and then go from there, but since i got it from a garage sale it didn't come with an Apple keyboard and i don't have one (i have a MacBook pro- which obviously doesn't come with a keyboard) I would be very appreciative if somebody could outline an alternative method of resetting an admins password without admin privelages in Mac OSX 10.4.11 :)

I'm assuming you have a keyboard, doesn't matter really if it's Mac or PC. All you need is a PS/2 to USB adaptor, found anywhere, like Radioshack. You could use it like a regular Mac keyboard that way. IDK about anything else, just telling you about the keyboard.

I have a usb 2.0 keyboard. I didn't word it very well... but what i meant to say is that i don't have an Apple keyboard. I have since tested booting into terminal on my Macbook Pro with that particular keyboard and it worked so i am assuming that it is not the keyboard.

Do you still have the installation disk for it?? What I would do if you do have it still with you. Boot into the installation disk. And go to the section where you can change the password for the admin. It should show the admin and any other account that is on the computer itself. This could help you out.

I would have done that, but as i said i obtained it from a garage sale :( I do have a 10.6 installation disk but as far as i know, 10.6 is Intel only. I think i might end up buying a dual layer dvd-r, downloading 10.5 off the net and making my own installation disc. Seems to me to be the easiest way to get around the problem.

That's the only way that I know of on how to get around it is by running the OS off the DVD and going that way since your in a generic admin when when you are going to be installing it from the dvd. I remember seeing some where on the net in regards of doing it that way.
