Original Question >> http://lockergnome.net/questions/131208/do-you-think-having-a-cd-drive-on-a-laptop-is-still-worth-it So I found this question and it was asked over one year ago. So do you STILL think it is worth having a disk drive? It has been a year and we have seen a lot of new stuff like more cloud options. Is it worth it to buy a laptop/desktop with out a disk drive? We have seen new laptops like the Retina Macbook Pro and Macbook Air's with out the disk drive. We have seen a lot more ultra books too. |

I guess I can't say it's the most useful thing to have on a laptop these days. I haven't used a disc for anything but movies and that can be done on my PS3 or if I really need to iTunes or Netflix. The only thing I use disks for is an extra backup solution on top of an external HDD. When I get my new retina MacBook if I come to a situation where I absolutely need a disk drive I will simply buy an external. |

i have had my iMac siince January 2010... The drive has been used under 20 times since then... My Macbook pro I bought in May 2010... Drive has been used 3-4 times max... Mac mini bought in 2011 - drive used once... I can honestly say I am ready to drop all forms of disks :o) |

Yup, because to me having a laptop or a desktop without a disk drive feels bootleg, and sometimes you really do need a CD/DVD drive for traditional installs. |

Drives will be eventually a think of the past, just like floppy disks back in the day, or tape-cassettes if you're really old like me to remember ;) If you really need one, I would get an external drive for home/office use. True, my 2012 13'' MBP still came with a drive, but I don't think I'm gonna use it a lot. So I will be upgrading the drive slot to a SSD in the (near) future... |

A cd/dvd drive is still useful to have, it is kinda like a gun it is better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it. For example suppose you need to run something like spinrite but the system will not properly boot from USB, then you can burn a CD. But for me personally, if I can reliably boot from a USB CD drive then I would rather have one since I hardly ever use it, (so much easier to use USB) When I built my desktop PC, I purchased a dvd burner and only used it once in the past 2 years and that was just to install windows since I was moving to a new chipset and wanted to do a fresh install in order to create a fresh disk image tailored to the new build. |

I use my external hard drive for backing up data so I don't have to use discs that often. I have maybe used my disk drive once or twice. |
|
I think they're still useful for dealing with boot issues and installs, but I have a flash drive the size of a tab key that's just as useful. |

In a tower case, there's no reason not to have one, they're cheap, and although they are rarely needed, they are still convenient in the even that they are. Since in these machines there is no downside to having one, I say go for it. In laptops, and small PC's, it's a different matter, if there's no space, then having a USB drive lying around may be more useful, but it's not the most important thing. |

ehh tape drive and both types of floppy drives went the same way , even the same type of sentiment and excuses.. the disk drive is pretty much obsolete, soon CD and dvd will go the same way then as more are moved to cloud computing hard drives too will become a thing of the past in personal devices , in a decade or so we will all be remembering the desk top and lap top fondly there will be some still out there mostly likely home brew but gone to the masses all the same .. the tower today too not needed even for server home brew rack units built with mini low cost boards and part can make up fairly nice low coast mini data centers .. were moving into interesting times for sure, already lots of new low cost mini units to test and work with .. |
