Let's say you register a domain, Example.com. You Host it on HostGator, but you want the nameservers to be NS1.EXAMPLE.COM & NS2.EXAMPLE.COM instead of NS54.HOSTGATOR.COM & NS55.HOSTGATOR.COM. Is that possible and if so how is it done?

EDIT: I found a way for anyone seeing this in the future, set two NS DNS Records at ns1.yoursite.com and ns2.yoursite.com then add two CNAME records hosts being ns1 and ns2 and point them to your Web Hosting's Original Namservers.

this wont work for most because most wont let you do anything with the CNAME..

it open them up to many many problems the servers are there and they are responsible for the IP block ..

also since you are most likely on a shared server you could run into issues from time to time with loss of the site since you are also not on a fixed Ip the dns name keeps you fixed to there machine..

and the host may object as this allows you to let others host sites inside your site on there nickle ..

Well then instead of the CNAME you could use an A Record and use the nameservers IP Address. And if your site is having downtime, thats really not DNS's Fault.

ifthe dns is not pointed to an IP adress that would be fault :) your shared hosted web site is not on a single fixed IP address .. that is why it is using a DNS .. .. another word a web server Site that has a fixed single IP that never changes dont need a name server that point to a domain with a fixed IP ..

the reason for DNS name is the ability to roatate IP adress and still be found ..

I can put it to you this way a website that wants uptime more then down uses DNS servers they point a domain to more then one ip from to to 100 each number can be in different blocks from different data centers there for if one block goes out repair power failure damage storm the next takes over ..

many times when you add 2 dnsnames you link to three Ip addresses one for NS111 one for NS 2 and one the domain name of the server links to and usually each IP is attached ran from a different down stream some times not even in the same country ..

On Shared Hosting you do get an IP however it usually redirects to an error page...With VPS's you get a "Dedicated IP"

(Aug 05 '12 at 10:08) Cameron Cameron's gravatar image

you set your own ns1 ns2 for your site now mind you dont have a server your site is a virtual host all your site is is a file named www.yoursite.com this server attaches to one and only one IP address which is most like the Ip for the hosts fixed ip when this goes your site will be down even while all the other sites continue on the sames server with no issue ..

look at it like this there is a gaint drive or bank of drives with virtual and Vps servers running througha router to a bank of server know as nameservers each attachted to a down stream .. fact of the mater is it is the only way a host can really promise unlimited bandwidth as well because every Ip[ address is linked to a fixed amount of bandwidth it can use at any given time and they might have one I p for every 6000 or 10,000 vitual site on there servers they rotate the ip address it is possible if your working on line on a website refreshing every 5 mins to have a differnet ip each time you refresh if the site has been estabilshed for a good amount of time ..

(Aug 05 '12 at 10:12) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

many host even go as far today to limit each Ip that visits a site in the number of calls and refreshes then it bans the IP for 12 to 24 hours many set a limit of 2000 some its much hire.

aince most who design websites and such work off line and do ftp up load of changes they know are good this is not an issue and its never noticed .. good exsample is my own wordpress site which has a limit of 2000 calls every 24 hours my site including ad banners plugins and such makes 103 to 115 calls each time the site is loaded I get less then 30 visits roughtly before my Ip here is banned and I have to start using a proxy or wait till the next day to get back in ..

you want a custom name server as in your own domain ..

the easyest way ir to put together your own server the whole process use to be free there were several groups out there that if youdidnt have at least a fixed perminate IP would even provide you with a pair of I P addresses linked to name server at your domain like ns1.lacobus.com and ns2 II think today all charge though groups I have checked are pretty resonable you can get one for like $20 a month ..

another easyer way to do it is to go to a web host that offer resellers accounts there is usually a fee you can pay to have personal name server..

either way it all start by registering a domain and then registering the domain to a fixed Ip linked to your personal name server ..

if I am confusing start you reading here :) http://dyn.com/dns/ this is one of the best and most reputable groups for DNS just keep in mind you can not use a personal DNS since they are data hosts your shared hosting folder is usually your domain name linked to there DNS ..

also keep in mind setting up your own personal DNS leaves you with the problem of finding at least 2 if not more reputable data centers in different locations either one side of the country and the other in case one has a big outages your linked in another way to a lot of down time or at least very slow load times ..

Any way where I can point an A Record like ns1 as the host and point it to Website IP?

(Jul 24 '12 at 18:46) Cameron Cameron's gravatar image

that will depend on who you register you domain with some will not allow you to use a records at all only DNS and MX ..

not that it is any of my business but why are you trying to attempt to hide your host any way ..

or do you have your own data center ??

(Jul 24 '12 at 18:54) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

i think you have things a tad mixed up any how :)

First you use a name servers to tie IPs to A block of servers each NS is for an Ip a block can have as many IPs as you would like 2 to 4 is most likely good on average ..

it makes all the IPs point to yourdomain.com

once you have a DNS this gives you an A record

the a record makes it possible for one block of server to be called say mail.yourdomain.com , ftp.yourname.com , www.yourname.com you get the Idea you could have a cluster of machines as sql servers and such ..

if you are on free or even paid hosting to let you use A record is to give youy the right to creatre sub domains some dont allow ...

I'm not trying to hide my hosting servers, just thought it'd be cool. lol.

(Jul 24 '12 at 19:40) Cameron Cameron's gravatar image

its doable I dont think there are any host doing it for free resellers will give you a personal name server for cleints to use at there domain host but they are paid reseller account where you put up several hundered dollars for xamount of sites to resell at recommended mark ups ..

(Jul 24 '12 at 19:43) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

Yeah, I was wondering if I could do it from a host that I use, if not, not a big deal
