A torrent is a special kind of list that tells your computer where to look on the Internet for a file that you want to download. The file isn't stored on any web site, but instead on a bunch of people's computers around the world. Your own computer can then download the file from these other people who already have it. Then, people will be able to download the file from you if you choose to share it.

Its peer to peer file sharing that isn't monitored through a companies servers. Thats why rhapsody got taken down but things like pirate bay aren't. because rhapsody would get content through their servers then people would download it. a bit torrent downloads from from people who seed content from tons of personal computers. and because pirate bay only makes the connection and doesn't actually ever have possession of any content it keeps it legal because there are actually many other good uses for bit torrents outside of pirating so they can't just say its illegal. the same reason they can't make paint illegal. yea people get high from it but it has a much more practical and legal use.
