I tried a software called "Game Booster" but it didn't work, the game lags a lot + an error came up while the game was running, that this game is closing in an unusual way. What to do?

What are your system specifications? It may not be that it's windows XP, but that your hardware is outdated?

Wait, are you running it from Steam, or a CD, and why do you need game booster?

Game Booster is software which temporarily optimises your system by disabling non-essensial services etc. It does give a noticeable performance boost.

ah, I see, but does the game run without it, hl2.exe is buggy, for me at least, and note I have plenty of system resources, so it could be disabling things it really needs or something

post your specs and if you you meet the requirements, then try adjusting your paged pool memory

decent guide on increasing it (only do it if you meet the requirements, if you do not then don't do it as you will be wasting resources.

HL2 works just fine with XP. It's not that bad on resources either. I would adjust the video options and dump Game Booster.
