I have an external hard drive at my house, and I would like to set it up so that I can access it from my computer at my house and my friend can access it from his computer at his house, so we can use it to share files. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance!

Look into OpenNAS. I'm not sure about it doing what you want it to do, though. I think it will. BTW, you will have to be ready to dedicate a machine to run OpenNAS, unless you go buy a NAS drive to serve this purpose. iomega NAS's are capable.

One things that comes to mind is enabling IIS that has an ftp feature if your using windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. Which you can tell the FTP to use the external hard drive. The question is which version of windows are you using or are you using Mac OSZ. The thing with FTP. Your friend would need to know your IP address that is coming from the cable modem or DSL modem in order to use ftp. Along with folder if any and a usernamen and password in order to do that.
