Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials has the ability to automatically update. It is said on Microsoft Security Essential's download page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

it sure does for sure update automatically it also updates when there are program updates you do have to becarfull with it though if you dont keep windows up to date the security will crash and from my experance the whole computer with it if a security update comes and the program is not up to date or out of sync ..

have 4 computers and seems to hold true on all 4 of them here
