I much prefer the GUI of the older versions of Ubuntu, unity is awful. No matter how bad unity is, it will never be as awful as Windows 8. Overall Windows is much better supported but I prefer the GUI of Ubuntu even though the Windows 7 GUI is not too bad. As for stability I oddly find Ubuntu more stable.

honestly they both do the same thing :)

they look slightly different but work very much alike Linux is a faster more integrated with the cloud , cloud back ups on unbuntu happen automatically the back up of all new files docs and configuration ..

the neat thing I have found if I am working on a document file and there is a power outage because files are backed up as they are made you loose very little data the computer restarts you load the program and Ubuntu will call your doc from the back up intact just pick up from where you were at ..

just like you can log into your goggle account when you re down load chrome and all your plugins book marks and history is complete restored Ubuntu can do this from a crash say you re install Ubuntu it can re install your desk top set up to the way you had it before the re install though you will have ti re install programs ..

microsoft is not there yet, with Ubuntu unity you don't have a desk top so much to talk about as a dock you can use any almost any desktop Chrome for that matter is desktops with aps and plugins ..

thoughI can tell you people are looking at windows 8 with the wrong eyes rather then what it is which is the same a dock for the real desk top that is just starting top be developed at this point in the cloud service ..

the other advantage is that it is Linux if you understand programming what so ever just open any text editor and you are writing a script.

it is lite and fast as well :)

I like both very much. I dual boot XP and 12.04. I think XP is more powerful in higher level administrative applications and easier on system resources for more taxing multimedia applications. Windows has troubleshooting apps that are usable by the intermediate user. I've been dual booting for some time now and testing open source apps on both platforms. Multimedia apps tended to run well on both; however on my older machines segmentation faults would occur in Ubuntu suggesting a need for more RAM. Unity is a fast nice looking interface, it's just not for everyone. Windows interface is hard on the eye but well organized. Like I said; I like them both and I'll dual boot as long as Microsoft will allow it.

ubuntu has the repair and trouble shooting tools to most of them run in the back groud at shut down and start up when required its mor intuitive for a newbie or experienced one figures out which tool to best use to correct its own..

why bother with a lot of button clo icking when file system needs repairing or restoring ..

(Aug 12 '12 at 07:36) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

And what tools would you be referring to?

(Aug 12 '12 at 10:02) ClosetFuturist ClosetFuturist's gravatar image

what tool ??? any time the filing system, or hard drive is in doubt CHKDSK and repair runs also if its set up Ubuntu one checks to make sure things match up with configuration ..

if your using network service they run checks too ..

(Aug 13 '12 at 17:07) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

Windows does that too except for the network repair. That takes a right click.

I was thinking more along the lines of administrative tools. Like Ubuntus' log files aren't as readable and sometimes you have to manually edit config files. Not really relevant to common usage but it bugs me.

I installed this copy of ubuntu 12.04 on a brand new HP g6 note book and I the lap top ran windows long enough to down load chrom down load the Image for ubuntu and do the hard drive formating since then its has ran Ubuntu trouble free and mind you this machine runs 24/7 only re-boot if a update requires whenI am not atthe computer I shut the lid and it sleeps open the lid it resumes right where I left off through rain shine and power failures ..

I have never need a repair tool

(Aug 13 '12 at 18:13) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

this lap top hasa top run time without reboot of over 80days and the only reason I did the re-bbot was the kernel update a few weeks ago have had this now since feb of this year..

(Aug 13 '12 at 18:15) jadtechnic jadtechnic's gravatar image

I'm glad they quit listing kernel updates in grub. The list would get pretty long before installing a new version.

Depending on what you want to do with the system itself either will do in a pinch. Since I have been using like Ubuntu since 2005. I like Ubuntu over windows. But due to working in an office environment. I still have to use windows to do most of my work in that over here. Since Ubuntu or the Linux environement is not that popular in an office environment. With the exception of the server side where it is most stable to use on Server sides.

I like them both. But I do find myself using Windows a lot more. But sometimes I like to get back into Ubuntu and just use is. Both are great, and both do basically the same thing.

Being I haven't used Windows regularly in years, definitely Ubuntu. I am not sure I could ever go back to Windows again.

I have gone back and forth between Ubuntu and Windows for many users now, but I think finally, I have made the decision to stick with Ubuntu and never go back to Windows unless I really need to, such as work or whatever, but even then I'll be using a work computer. For my everyday computing, Ubuntu will be my OS of choice :)

I use Ubuntu as my current operating system. I boot off of my Asus Ultrabook. And it works fine. I edit videos and do my photo editing on ubuntu. I think that Ubuntu is way more stable than Windows.

i find no reason to go back to windows for office and I know many many who use Ubuntu in the office setting and love it , the popularity of Ubuntu and mint have multiplied over the last 18 months .. with the popularity of android smart phones Linux is the most used OS on computing devices it will take time but eventually people will get around to recognizing it..

Linux and I-os are the two main player in the market now there are more Phone and soon tablets will be added in to this fray there are more sold and in use every min of every day then there are windows PCs

everyone here is still asking if we think linux will gain in popularity soon now its already there and has been for sometime now and took over the lead not really all that quietly .

most likely at this point there is no right answer for sure , only thing most can know for sure is that its the age of moblie computing and that in this race android and apple are it windows is atthis point trying to make a better late then never show either way there useful days as a PC OS are about done..

window is still on more PCs today as I look out there when I am at the mall on the bus no matter where I go people have mobile devices many more then one I would say the average college age student high school carry 2 of them and are not hiding the fact they are talking on one texting or updating profiles on the other at the same time boosting about there share data plan and how they are thankful for it ..

in my veiw there are more android (linux) based and IOs devices in use on the internet then there are PC at any one time I see them talking answering text, emails. bloging on there smart phones tablets and ultrabooks in the mall on the bus in cabs at the book stores while having lunch they were watching the oylimpics, and news listening to music ..

its gotten so bad in some places that death while texting and talking while walking is becoming concern enough they are talking about making it a crime to talk or text while walking ..

it amazing what I have been witnessing in this time of smart phones and the number of people that are never disconnected out there over the last 18 months and it keeps becoming more and more ..

if you see any network TV and advertising you will see no more PCs they are all net books ultra thin books tablets NOT a single desktop I seen One in a flter here a few months back for a small electronic shop that was trying to blow out what was left of there stock ..

for the guys who say LInux isn't popular in office use , I have news many countries including the USA are now passing labor laws making it nessary to pay for work done outside of working hours bwecause people are using there ultra books and smart phones to continue work hours after they are off the clock many for as much a 10 to 25 hours over time in a week ..

they are using android, linux I phones any thing they can type message email talk or video chat with ..

they had been doing this not getting paid unfairly used now their work after hours by law has to be recognized and paid at going rates including time and a half and double time where aplicable by law ..

i was here for the start of the PC ear and the Online craze IRC insanity and we are seeing it happen all over again in micro (mini) form ..

it was funny sitting in a popular steak house sports type cocktail lounge having lunch with my wife and baby group next to us doing the same surounded by 5 large screen tvs 4 people at the table next to us watching sports on there phones..

we were invited to a party over the summer where we felt way out of the loop and out of place because everyone was sitting with there smart phone tweeting between each other we were all in the same back yard no body talking or inter acting face to face ..
