I have yet to find a program that compares at the same level and quality as Photoshop. If you're not looking for the absolute highest quality output and editing features, then GIMP should fill many of your needs. Many people can get by using GIMP but I know that many, including myself find the Photoshop experience much more concise and dependable. It's one of the few programs that I highly recommend people invest in.

Not even close, you will have some that say "It's open source so it's free, and free is better." Not in this case, photoshop is so much better then GIMP that it's not even funny. Ever try to open a psd file in GIMP? you can but you can't edit layers (Yes I know PSD is photoshop) there seems to be just so much more you can do with it.

Can Photoshop open .xcf, gbr, gih, or pat files?

GIMP is not a good replacement for Photoshop, but if you can get around in it you can strong-arm you way into doing what you need to get done, albeit sometimes painfully. That's my perspective as a Photoshop user who's currently relegated to using GIMP for some image editing tasks, since I do not have a Mac license for Adobe Photoshop, only a PC license (old version of Photoshop.)

Yeah... BUT, If I had the money, I would be jumping on to Adobe as fast as possible, I'm ok with GIMP, but it has slow loading times and it doesnt cut it, I'm saving up for Adobe's Creative suite, That is £2,500

I concur. I'm just making do with GIMP for the short term. Most of my image editing is on photos, and for that, I have Adobe Lightroom on my Mac.

It doesn't. For the average user, GIMP is a great editor. But for
professional editing of images, it doesn't hold a candle to Photoshop.

I would say the Photoshop is easier to use. I can make things break to easily in GIMP.
