Youtube cover music video license fees.

Sorry for that title in advance :P

I've been watching a lot of Minecraft cover music videos lately, covers of popular music like songs from Adele. They're performing and writing the texts themselves, however, they either have a karaoke playback thingy or they imitate the music. My question, do you need a license for using the music of a song that is copyright protected and how much would that cost?

I do realize that this situation is different from country to country, I'd be interested in the situation in the USA and Germany.

If anyone happens to know more, I'd really appreciate some help :)

All you really need is permission. Fair use is complicated with music. You should contact a producer to find out what their policy would be for your specific project.

Okay, I will definitely do that. But that means you need (probably written) permissions from the producer, right?

I was just thinking there could be a law that allows you to use either the music or the text of a song or something like that.

It would probably be an e-mail and that would work. There's Fair Use clauses but it doesn't apply for entertainment purposes. You're welcome.
