Are the grips new? I mean new things always smell weird after you use em for the first time. After a while that smell should dissipate.

had the camera for about a year now, got the mono-pod 7 hours ago.

I had a sticky wireless mouse that made my hands smell funny. I put it in a drawer and it oozed. I threw it out.

Are the grips made out of rubber? It's possible that they have been exposed to some poor elements and have started to rot. Most likely would be sweet from your hands getting into the grips causing the smell.

You should try to clean the grips with some kind of disinfecting wipes. I've also heard many people suggest that you put the camera in a ziplock bag with a couple of fabric softener sheets after cleaning to deal with the smell.
