I am going to be traveling to Italy this summer and more or less want to use my iPhone 4S the same as I do here in the US. I have AT&T as my carrier and they have told me that it is cheaper to sign up for one of their international plans. What I would like to know is if it is really cheaper to use AT&T's international plans or pop in a SIM card from one of AT&T's partner carriers(H3G Italia,Telecom Italia Mobile,Voda fone and Wind Telecommunizioni) when I am over there. What do you think? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

I'd rather get a local SIM, I have traveled around the world and it's better for me IMO. For one the rates are cheaper if you have a local SIM and you have more freedom with a local SIM as in more coverage with a different carrier than what AT&T would give you. I travel frequently to the Dominican Republic, and to get an Orange Dominicana SIM or a Claro SIM is really easy. It's the same in the UK, in Canada, in the US, etc. When I turned on my roaming with T-Mobile, I got charged so much because I roamed overseas (even with the international plan). So the moral here is get yourself a local SIM.
