What's the point of the rating system on Google Music and iTunes?

So I'm using iTunes and Google Play Music and I see the rating system of either thumbs up and down (like Pandora), and stars on iTunes. What's the point of this? Are people supposed to thumb their music for future reference? I don't use it, do you? And in Google Music do they put this in a database somewhere since it's supposed to be synced with their servers and whatnot?

I use it. It shows my preference in songs and I can simply sort by rating if I was to listen to my more popular songs. If you don't use it then why not just remove it?

Well I only use iTunes for music. I tend to forget to rate things when listening so a lot is unrated. I've attached a picture to the answer to demonstrate it.
