I recently bought a SSD and it came with a fancy SATA3 6GPS cable; my friend tells me that the actual cable isn't any different, only the interface is. My question to you folks; does the SATA cable have an impact on the performance or does only the connection to the motherboard have that? (My motherboard does have a SATA3 input.)

Thanks already for answering!

The cable you use doesn't have any real effect on the performance you'll get from that drive. Maximum PC took a look at this question a year ago, and even ran a couple of tests to verify it. They had this tidbit that answers your questions perfectly...

"The official word from the SATA International Organization is no, not at all.

The SATA I/O lays it out in its FAQ:

Question: Does SATA 6Gb/s require different connectors and cables to support the higher transfer speed?

Answer: The same cables and connectors used for current SATA 1.5 and SATA 3.0 Gb/s implementations can be used to connect SATA 6Gb/s devices, although SATA-IO recommends quality components be selected to ensure data integrity and robust operation at the faster SATA 6Gb/s transfer rate. Keeping the existing SATA connector form factor enables SATA 6Gb/s to be designed into the same cost-conscious hardware architectures while minimizing infrastructure changes.”

Since you have the SATA III cable, just use that one. It probably won't affect performance, but I would use the guaranteed SATA III cable.
