"3rd Party Software" is a term used by Companies to refer to other companies software that does the same thing. It's not a category.

Third Party is simply a figure of speech derived from the grammatical distinction between 1st, 2nd and 3rd persons (I, you, he/she and we, you, they). It was originally a legal definition (as seen in Third Party, Fire and Theft motor insurance) of those to whom you are liable in tort. It has no real counterparts at 1st and 2nd, anymore than the Third Way, the third degree, or The Third Man do!

Second Party Software is when a software development company develops solely (or mainly) for a particular platform or company (that's they're not owned by). For example, Rare used to be the second-party developer for Nintendo (until Microsoft bought them out...). Other examples include Insomniac Games and Sony (Ratchet and Clank), and Game Freak and Nintendo (Pokemon).
