they are pretty cheap to make, (I currently use a hardcase for my mytouch 3g slide and it cost $1.50 (free shipping) from china. While it does not have much padding, it does offer a decent amount of protection and is about the same quality as the $5-7 ones that I regularly see in many stores.

remember companies don't pay a retail markup for their supplies and when they are buying materials in batches of a few hundred tons, the per unit cost becomes extremely low to a point where they can sell a phone case for $1.50, not charge for shipping from china, and still make money.

It's a marketing ploy that's as old as the hills. Sell the product at what seems like a bargain and then profiteer like mad on accessories and add-ons knowing that people won't be seen dead with anything less than a designer label!
