no more then $60 you can get a net gear router one of the best for under $60 most likely at Wal-Mart wireless and you can hard wire 4 into it as well..
the most important thing to be sure of is that your have newer higher end wireless phones in the house the older ones tend to use run on harmonic frequencies and they can bump each other out making you lose connection and reset and seem like you have a poor or bad router when a phone close to the router rings ..

I'd spend no more than $30 for an apartment. I have a Linksys E1000 and I live in a crowded apartment here in NYC and it's great. You can drop the stock software for DD-WRT and it makes it so much better.
However what @Jackster1337 said, if it's a big house you can spend probably to upwards $60. Don't get scammed into buying a $30 router for $50 at a big box store, do your homework first. With that said, take all of our comments into consideration.

I would spend around $150 on my home router. That is how much I spent on mine since I didn't want to have to use a repeater and I wanted one that would last me a while. I have never had a problem with it either in the year that I have had it. But really if you have a larger house depending on the materials used to build the house you might need several routers. I can only access my wifi from inside my house and sometimes very weakly around the outside but that is because of the brick on the outside. If you live in a small condo then a $30 will do just fine, I just installed one in a clients condo the other day.
