I want server(s) for

  • iTunes
  • Web server with phpmyadmin
  • DNS server (maybe)
  • Windows home server (64-bit)
  • File server

I am been looking on eBay:

  • IBM System x3850 4 x Dual Intel Xeon 3.6GHz 18GB DDR RAM Server - 8863-2SM
  • Dell Poweredge 2850 Dual Xeon 3.2 4GB 2x73.4g U320 10K Raid
  • Dell PowerEdge 2850 PE2850 Server 1GB 2x3.2GHz 1x72GB
  • Dell PowerEdge 1850 Server 2 x Xeon 3.0ghz 64bit 4gig

Are any of these any good? I can't spend too much on something I might use once every week.

for what you listed, you are better off getting a netbook and use it as a server.

A modern one uses around 3-10 watts depending on the load (and even less with the screen is off)

I use one for my security camera system, and also for DLNA.

A decent security camera system with 4 480p cameras and a DVR box will often cost around $500-700

while a netbook and a few 1080p logitech c920's can allow you to have a system of 4 1080p cameras, a few active USB extension cables, and a netbook that can double as a portable system, and a DLNA server and a bunch of other stuff for under $500 (and the power consumption is lower then the security camera dedicated DVR's

anyway, a netbook makes a decent low powered server.

if possible search for a cheap used dell inspiron mini (many of them are passive cooling, thus making them almost completely silent).

No need to buy a expensive and more powerful server that will suck down like 400+ watts when you don't need to.

ok, you point out a great about the power usage but a netbook will not the best to run a web server with php & sql plus other stuff.

if it is a small site, eg one for use of like 10-20 people, then a netbook will be just fine. They are actually pretty capable, and are more powerful than many web servers from like 8-10 years ago.

you only really need a high end server if you plan to host a large scale site with a lot of back end services and handling really complex databases.

if anything the OP should use his current system as a server and seeing what kind of load it puts on the system, then see if a slower system will meet his needs.

Most true servers, lack many power saving features found in systems targeted at consumers, and for the most power savings, a laptop or netbook is best.

If i buy server which has 2 power plug, can i only use 1.

yep you can use just 1, in many cases, the second power supply is just there to provide a failover in case one dies.

also depending on the cost you could just build a lower powered desktop PC. there is no need to go for a full on server machine if you are just using it at home. they don't offer additional performance for the money, they just offer additional reliability.

Dude, don't waste your money. What you want out of a server can be used with basically any computer.

Try This
