When does AT&T apply their early upgrade fee?

I plan on upgrading my phone to an iPhone 5 on AT&T, but because I am not yet electable for upgrade ill have to pay the $250 fee. My question is, when will I pay it, meaning do I pay up front when I buy the phone or is it added to my next wireless bill? For that matter, would they allow me to pay part of the fee up front and the other part on my bill? I've looked all over their site trying to find the answer but I'm coming up empty. Thanks for any help you can give!
