Is there a way to directly edit OSX Finder's "Open With" list?

I've browsed the system files and profiles, but couldn't find where the list is stored.

In short...most likely not..but why would want to edit that list anyways?

Why? --- For some reason various apps appear multiple times in certain lists (Nisus Writer Pro appears three times in text opening lists!), and some apps don't appear at all even though I want them to (Acrobat in the list for opening tiff files, TextMate in every list).
