When I was in Boston (Near Back Bay, more towards Boston College and Chestnut Hill):

Upper Manhattan/Bronx speeds (keep in mind this one is skewed a bit since I was near Yankee Stadium and hundreds of schools at 7am).:

1st device was the Galaxy S III I bought a few days ago, and the 2nd one is my MyTouch 4G. Keep in mind, my MyTouch can theoretically do HSPA+ 14.4, while my Galaxy S III can do theoretically do HSPA+ 42, so that's a large factor with my MyTouch lmfao.

Does the Ping really mean anything?

It does because it means how fast it can talk to the server.
