Today I decided to give finally up on Diablo 3 for a myriad of problems I have with the game; I've been a huge fan of the franchise since its earliest days, but the current game doesn't even touch Diablo 2 for quality or gameplay and I'm not the only one who agrees -- with a massive drop off in player numbers affecting gameplay further. So I'm looking to an alternative to get my RPG fix on my Mac rather than console. I've tried MMOs before and they've never really appealed to me as they feel too open without direction in regards to story, so Diablo 2 for me was a good alternative with eight-player games. However, I have tried WoW before on a trial about five years ago and I have to admit, I liked it -- in fact, a little too much -- where you log on and the next thing you know, hours have passed so quickly, which is why I didn't continue with it! I didn't want it taking over my already busy life; things have changed in that respect and I have more time for gaming, so would consider trying it again, but I think it's somewhat dated.

Its eighth birthday is just around the corner with a new expansion having recently been released, but shouldn't Blizzard be looking to call time on it and develop a new up-to-date, and even bigger and better sequel rather than releasing more expansions just to boost subscriptions that will inevitably begin to drop off again? Any word if Blizzard's even got this on the drawing board yet because, of course, it takes years to develop a game. It took about five years or so to develop the mess that is Diablo 3; anyone think WoW will still be the cash cow that Blizzard relies on in five to six years' time without a sequel?

For now I'll try Torchlight 2, perhaps League of Legends, or maybe Guild Wars 2. But if a new WoW were in development, it would have me very interested! :)

First, you can play WoW up to level 20 without a subscription. Leaks and other announcements have indicated Blizzard is working on several simultaneous projects, and the new "Mist of Pandara" release has been under development for several years.

At the moment, I'm playing a very nice free-to-play MMORPG called 'Allods'./
They say it's not a WoW clone, but it feels very WoW-like.
There are differences, of course: no Death Knights, for example. A very nice addition is the possibility to 'autorun' to a quest objective & back again to the questgiver. (I'm lousy at navigation, and always got lost in WoW...)

Here is the thing with subscription based gaming:

Why make new versions? If you can provide the same desired content on the old platform, and you get paid by the month? why invest in a new version?

Not to say that they wont... but you can run on the same platform for many years because you don't need to sell things to make money, you make it on a subscription basis, all you have to do is regulate it and provide content.

well that is the thing though, it's eight years old next month so it's had it's day in the sun and subscriber numbers have been slowly declining for some time now. Releasing new expansion to come back the game and renew their subscriptions to then leave again isn't a business model that can last, and as i mentioned it takes a very long time to develop a game properly so unless they act now (or have been?) in developing a new WoW then sooner rather than their player base will shrink to a point they as a company can't find sustainable.

The choice to close down Star Wars Galaxies and move onto the Old Republic for example, Galaxies was eight years old when it was shut down and the new Star Wars MMO took it's place. So perhaps that's the benchmark when it comes to an MMO's shelf life, about eight years in which case WoW is about to reach and surpass that point.
