Need Help Upgrading CPU

Looking for a few of the most top end socket 939 CPUS. Anyone have any reccomendations. I currently have a AMD 64 3800+ 2.4ghz. I recently bought a R6750 graphics card and a new 500watt power supply. I have 2048MB of DDR memory. I have been trying to upgrade my PC so I can game with HQ graphics and im afraid im not getting the full potential outta my Graphics card with my CPU because when I put my graphics card onto high quality settings i have very low FPS with great graphics but when I have my graphics card on High Perfomence setting I have high FPS with low graphics. The only thing I can think of to upgrade my CPU.

CURRENT SPECS (Graphics Card: XFX Radeon R6750 Core Edition/1GB DDR3) (Proccessor: AMD 64 3800+ 2.4ghz) (Ram: 2048MB DDR) (OS: Windows XP 32bit)

I plan to upgrade the Ram up to a total of 4GB instead of the 2GB. I just need the best socket 939 CPU and ill have my motherboard hooked up with all the bells and whistles it supports

The thing is, that whole thing is very out of date. The lilkely bottleneck is both the CPU, the RAM (amount and speed) and the Motherboard, which likely can't provide enough bandwidth for a modern GPU. If you want to game well, you'll need to change the motherboard, CPU and RAM.

OK I understand. So basically Im better off buying a new computer pretty much and I could just stick the graphics card into it and it would be way better than spending the money to upgrade the cpu and ram.

If this is the case do you have any computers you recommend preferably one known for good gaming specs. It dosnt have to come with a nice gfx card because I can stick the R6750 into it. I would only be looking to spend like 300-400$ or is that not enough $ for a decent computer. Im just trying to figure out what my best option is and cheapest. Also im not really looking to just do an upgrade on motherboard, cpu, and ram beacause i have no clue how to install a new motherboard (I have knowledge on installing CPUs, and if it would even fit in my case. plus by the time I do that i would be close to the $ of a new PC im sure.

I recommend not buying a computer, but building one. Most retail boxes include lackluster internals like the motherboard.

Most likely, you'll still be able to use parts like the case, optical drive (DVD drive), graphics card, and hard drive. However, you will need to buy another copy of Windows, but I think that students get a large discount for like the first month of sales, so you should check on that.

You could upgrade to a opteron 185 but I don't really recommend it, instead, you can just overclock your current CPU to about 3GHz and get similar result.

Due to how outdated socket 939 is, you will overpay for far less performance, eg you can get better performance from a AMD entry level A8 CPU and pay less for it than the cost of a older AMD opteron CPU

Also avoid buying prebuilt systems, unless you are okay with getting ripped off.

If possible (if the case supports full sized ATX motherboards), is buy a new CPU, motherboard and RAM, then keep all of the other components the same, you will get significantly more performance for the money and even lower your power usage (is you are going for a more mid range CPU)

PS if you change just the CPU, Motherboard, and RAM, you can get a upper mid range (close to high end) system for $300-400

For example, this purchase will put your CPU performance close to that of a high end system (by todays standards), (PS that core i5 CPU is basically of the same performance of the core i7, it just lacks hyper threading which most applications do not take advantage of anyway (unless you are using you are using highly threaded professional applications such as adobe aftereffects or maya )

(Make sure you overclock any CPU that you buy, it is safe as long as you do not use a dangerous voltage and don't let the CPU get above 100C (the CPU throttles at 105C and if it goes any higher than 105C, it does a thermal shutdown)

On average you should be able to overclock the CPU to 4.5GHz - 4.7GHz
