So right now my computer is really disappointing me. It's slow and cheap. So right now i'm looking for a new laptop. I want something with a 15-17inch screen and a fast processor. It has to be reliable though. Nothing more than $1000.

How about a Lenovo ThinkPad T520? I love ThinkPads, I think they are kind of a hidden gem because not everyone outside the business scene knows about these. These are great computers. You can choose either from the regular one, or the "Enhanced Graphics one". You can also customize your ThinkPad from the site as well. Here's a link to Lenovo US's site: http://goo.gl/a3Srt.

Wait for ivy bridge laptops to come out before buying.
ivy bridge mobile CPU's are where most of the improvements for the ivy bridge line take place. (due to the lower power usage, intel is able to make mobile CPU's perform much closer to current gen desktop CPU's )
While the rest of the components will still be the standard slower mobile stuff, at least you will have a desktop like CPU performance compared to current gen hardware.
if you look at some of the leaked benchmarks such as http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26692-intel-22nm-ivy-bridge-mobile-benchmarks-go-public
you can see the ivy bridge mobile chips performing similarly to a desktop core i7 2600k
I recommend waiting and then keeping an eye out for companies like dell, lenovo, asus, and acer to come out their their ivy bridge lineup and see who offers the best price to perfrmance ratio.
(PS the onboard intel video still sucks so if you plan to game, you need a dedicated videocard)

Toshiba and Acer laptops are pretty good for an affordable price. About the HP I've never had that kind of computer so I can't vouch for them but HP seems to be giving large discounts fairly often.
