Would it be a good idea to get a Windows 8 computer this Friday, with a whole new computer. A All in One Touch Screen computer with Windows 8. Or do you think it would be better to get a new computer later, when more OEM's make newer computers (if they do). Or the price of All in ones goes down.

Windows 7 will not go away any time soon. I used to call windows XP the fisher price version of Windows 2000, well Windows 8 is kind of the fisher price version of Windows 7.

With that said, I don't for see the price of windows 7 computers going down. I feel windows 7 will be supported as long, if not longer, then windows XP (until 2014.)

Also, one should never rush to get a Microsoft OS, they tend to flop every other, and they are due, I hope they break this trend but I don't see how they can't with windows 8

Wait and see how people react to it before you end up a victim of false hope. You can learn this from past experiences with Windows Vista and the new iPhone. People rushed out to buy the new product and were highly disappointed with the outcome.

Because Windows 8 is built off the same platform as Windows 7, compatibility shouldn't be much of an issue. If you NEED to buy one, go to a store and try various Windows 8 machines out and make sure you REALLY like it.

I'm hoping to get into a Microsoft store to play around with Windows 8 for a few hours before buying. I want to try their phone, surface and desktops with both touch and arrow.

So the backward compatible version of W8 doesn't require hardware virtualization and execute disable bit?

It's the old Microsoft "leapfrog" effect:

95 (good), 98 (bad), 98SE (good), Millenium/ME (bad), XP (good), Vista (bad), 7 (good)...you know the rest?

I'm waiting for 9

Maybe they will break that trend this time around. I hope so.

Millenium/ME. Well you're going to have to break that there sir. They were made for two different markets. Millenium is the more professional version, while ME is for the home. 98 also. 98 was shit. 98SE, wasn't.

From what I've seen of it in the Beta and RTM I have been using, never. I hate the way it works so much, It's a little quicker performance wise, but the UI just makes me want to cry.

I have had all three pre-release versions and it's the worst user experience I have ever encountered. Words cannot explain how much a mistake it is. Microsoft seem to no longer know the industry or their customers.

This pretty much goes for any hardware or software purchase. It is usually a good idea to hold off on any purchase if it has just been released. There are both security and usability issues to contend with. Usually wait for the first major update and security fixes.

Thank's. It really looks like I should wait for the first update, or just to see how Windows 8 plays out. What if everyone does that, and nobody gets Windows 8?

I might do that mainly because I want to see OEM companies make more innovative All in one computers. From what I see so far online, there really is a small number of All in one touch screen computers. It's not yet a standard. I don't think now really is the best time, because as soon as the OEM companies start innovating new computers that are amazing, I don't want to be stuck with something older.

Thanks everyone who answered this question. I think I will wait for Windows 8, but I still really want to go to the Microsoft store to be present at the release.

Don't be too quick to get an all-in-one- I have had one for about a month, and I like the size of the screen, but the touch-screen bit is awkward when on a vertical surface. I wish I had held out and got a tablet-converting laptop.

You might want to hold off to see how the market shakes down. Someone might come out with a tablet this month that disappears in 2 months. Do you really want something unsupported? Wait a few months for the reviews to come out and the market to settle down. Also, Microsoft has already said they're coming out with ANOTHER version of Windows 8 down the road, so if you buy a tablet computer now maybe you could have gotten a better version in a couple months.

Hold off. I wouldn't jump the gun on some of these new products coming out soon, especially products that are relatively new. see how everything goes then decide.
