My father has asked me if i can try build him a basic website for the conservation group he works for. He's on a tight budget at work and needs a basic website to help advertise and showcase the training work they do, what he needs is a site with a basic home page with a few tabs taking you to a photo gallery where i could also perhaps embed youtube vids of their training days, a page about the training programs on offer, a about us page detailing the organisations history and the work they do, and another with contact information. Where should i start? What tools can i use that are free? How do i go about (and how much would it cost) registering a website as a .org or .co.uk? Are there templates i can use to create it rather than doing things from scratch?
I've never built a website before and he has no room in his budget to hire someone to do it, he doesn't need it to be 'professional' he just needs it there to attract further business and to attach to correspond's so potential customers can learn more about the training they offer. Any advice you can give me on how to go about this would be appreciated.

You can use WordPress as a Content Managment System, (Over using Dreamweaver and having to update slowly and buying expensive software, as well as know Code) and Buy a Domain, Get Hosting, and upload WordPress and build your site. I'm a little broad there but if you need more help email me Cameron (AT) webname (dot) com

by basic I am guess he mean static site this is simple you just have to get all the text and graphoic from them they want used for the site and add it use note pad to put it all together simple HTML you might need a scanner if they only hard hard copy for graphics ..
most hosts offer simple page tools just add text , graphics and an email contact :)

Using wordpress would be the easiest way of going about it. Since you don't have to do any programming involved. the Plus side is that you can use windows live writer for windows or under Mac OSX Qumana as a editor and publish them directly to the site itself without learning any coding. and you can embed pictures and video's to the site. You might have to go through like youtube for the video. But that is minor stuff.

Wordpress is by far the best choice, as others have mentioned on here. I have been using wordpress for years and have tried many different scripts like wordpress but nothing compares to it, as wordpress has many many plugins and themes.

If you know absolutely nothing about building websites, then I would have to recommend using WordPress.com or Blogger to build your site and pointing a custom domain name to your site as any newbie could easily use the two platforms I just mentioned. I used to be in your shoes too, but creating a website is as easy as cooking a cheeseburger once you learn some things. :)
