Which is better pre-paid or choosing mobile phone plans?

It really depends on your usage and how your carrier handles over use on the mobile plans. Like some carriers in Asia handles excess data to be capped at a $15 fee (charged about $0.15/KB). After that $15 it turn unlimited so no worries there. So all in all, it depends on how the carrier handles things.

On the other hand though, using a prepaid number is also good cause when you're on prepaid you would normally think twice about over using your phone to like say check your twitter every 5s while commuting. It is a hassle to 'top up' your credits though.

If you want a smartphone like the iPhone or Galaxy 3, in the long run the phone plan will end up being cheaper. Pre-paid is only if you think you won't be able to make payments or you don't want an expensive smartphone.

Not really. I know people who have smartphones and are on Prepaid MNVOs because they're a hell of a lot cheaper. For example, Straight Talk a AT&T and T-Mobile MNVO, for $45 a month, unlimited talk text and web. Sure you have to bring (which means buy full price) your own phone but it's cheaper than worrying if you'll hit your data limit. If you hit your data limit then what? The whole point of a smartphone is to stay connected.

Agree with ^

Sometimes prepaid is much more affordable and cheap than a plan. Not only from AT&T and T-Mobile but carriers like Singtel in Singapore it's sometimes sensible to get a prepaid number, you get tied down for two years as well, so if you're in Singapore, you might as well get prepaid if you got the phone!

That's true, with prepaid you could port a number, and in a month if you don't like the service, you could go for a different company and port your number with them, so on so forth. You're not tied down essentially to one company.

Pre-paid service =/= cheap smartphone all the time.

I'm using a Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile's $30 plan. You can buy unlocked phones and bring them to pre-paid carriers such as Straight Talk or T-Mobile and get a sweet deal, you just have to pay a hefty price for the phone itself.
