Do Windows 7 programs run on Windows 8?

Is it approved by Microsoft or do you have to install some random software? Or is it not a option at all?

Yes, many Windows 7 programs run flawlessly on 8. If you run into problems (which you shouldn't), you could do compatibility mode.

You can, and will probably, use Windows 7 compatible programs on Windows 8, such use is supported by Microsoft, but might not be supported by the software vendor. You can use the Windows Upgrade Advisor if you are unsure, and it wil tell you the state of each of Your programs, as well as you drivers/hardware, when it comes to Windows 8 compitability.
