The new iPad had upgrades to the following: CPU (A5X Processor) Screen (Retina Display) Camera (Rear camera now shoots 5mp shots and has similar optics to that of the iPhone 4s and also shoots 1080p video) and thats all I can remember for "major" upgrades.

Yeah really its only visuals and camera features that can read faces and tag people in your photos. The cpu is still a duel core but a quad core for graphics. So in laments terms it has 1080p instead of 720p(meaning more details in photos, videos, visuals) its a bit thicker. Does the same thing as the old one. If you don't use cameras...don't care for visuals do your self a favor and just buy an ipad 2. it's at 399.99. (100 dollars lower the 3rd gen) And yes I work at a technology retailer and sell 100's of Ipads....

In going from the ipad 1 to the ipad 2, you get a dual core CPU instead of a slower single core, as well as a much faster videocard
the screen for the most part remains the same
You also get 512MB RAM instead of 256MB from the ipad 1.
With ipad 3 the memory is doubled again to 1024MB the CPU remains the same, but the GPU is twice as fast to handle the higher res display
it also has a better camera.
PS the ipad 1 is not worth it (not enough RAM which does not make it very good for modern apps and multitasking)
