How does the Internet work? Why do I need an ISP to get on the Internet? Isn't the Internet free? It is connecting one computer to another. So how does it work and why do I need an ISP -- for example, Comcast?

Unless you can afford all the gear necessary, you need an internet service provider. Here is an article that does a pretty good job explaining the basics.

That does well as for explanations to I've also found this as well a video in general without going into too much details on how it works as well. http://warriorsofthe.net/ Just the rudamentory of things.
