Compuer screen black when it boots windows?

My computer's screen goes black when I start it up. It shows the brand and the command prompt/BIOS thingy, and then I see the Microsoft Logo, but then it goes black. You can hear the login screen come up, but the screen stays black and you cannot do anything. What can I do to fix this?

*This may be realated to a video driver or something, as I had just installed a new game and had booted the game but it didn't work. (the game also went to black and quit)

This depends on your version of Windows. I had this problem a lot on Vista, and eventually had to reinstall it from the disk. You could try booting into safe mode and work on from there.

yes, I am in vista. If i tried safe mode what would I do to get normal mode to work?

Once you're in safe mode try to do a system restore. If that doesn't work try to do an OS repair. Boot from your installation disk, and after selecting language click on repair (bottom left corner). Select your OS, and see if it finds anything wrong (you may need to do this more than once) if that does nothing I think an OS reinstall is the only option.

does your pc have more than one graphics adapter? That is including any onboard ones... windows may be trying to use a different output than what bios is... It may also be trying to use your tv out if your pc has one. If you go into safe mode on windows and the display works go to device manager and delete the display device (graphics card) so when you restart your PC, Windows will reinstall the drivers for you.
